New Pond and Lake Construction
A properly built pond will need to adhere to certain principles. It is actually a systematic process that is not so different than building a house or any other structure. As you will see, building a functional pond requires a lot more than just digging a hole and filling it with water and fish.
That’s where Gradeworks Inc. can help. We can guide you through the entire process of constructing a beautiful, functional and easy-to-maintain pond.
Following are just a few of the ways Gradeworks Inc. can guide you and make your pond building experience a success.
-
Inspect the area in which you wish to build your pond.
+Inspect the area in which you wish to build your pond. Many things here have to be taken into consideration before digging ever begins. The topography for the location of your pond must be determined. The area must be suitable for damming the water that will fill your pond.
-
Determine and locate the water supply source for your pond.
+You will need to determine if your pond will be fed by streams, wells or surface water being diverted to you pond.
-
Determine the size and depth of your pond.
+To begin with, you will need to determine what the pond will be used for. Once all the uses of the pond have been established, the proper size pond that will fit your needs, as well as will fit within the buildable area on the pond site, can be decided.
-
Now that you have located a suitable pond site on your property, it’s time to start building.
+You can contract with Gradeworks, Inc. knowing your pond will be built to specifications, equal to your expectations, on time and within budget
Pond and Lake Repair
Similar to a house and a car, ponds and lakes can also deteriorate over the course of time. Severe and unpredictable weather northeast Ohio sees every year along with various wildlife, problems can be lurking about and worsening without any type of warning. Gradeworks is equipped and prepared to deal with all types of issues whether they be emergency repairs or known repairs that need to be made later and time. Below are a few examples of the most common types of problems seen on a regular basis.
-
Overflow Repair/Replacement
+When it comes to overflows, these structures tend to be the weakest links throughout the entire pond or lake. Concrete/Plastic structures can crack, steel pipes can corrode, or separate causing a leak in the system resulting in the loss of precious water and putting the ecosystem at risk. Some of these issues can be fixed with a simple collar or sleeve to seal up a leak where as some overflows will be in need of a full replacement. Whatever the case may be, gradeworks is equipped and experienced, ready to keep your pond or lake full and thrive
-
Dam Repair
+Ponds and lakes may be full when first built but over the course of time gradually lower, in some cases lower overnight. The most common causes for this are mother nature or the pond or lake being built using improper materials. Dams can deteriorate over time from loose clay pack, heavy rains, freezing and thawing, animal/rodents, and simple tree roots growing through causing a slow leak. These are very common problems and sometimes unpreventable but luckily for you, they are completely fixable using new and innovative techniques.
-
Leak Repair
+When a new pond or lake is being built the first step is to find suitable ground. If the bottom of the area does not have a solid base meaning strong and thick clay layer, a pond or lake can lose water over time especially through the hot and dry summer months when there is very little water coming in. If your pond or lake is showing signs of water loss and the overflow and damns are good, the problem may lie beneath the water. The entire area may need relined using either compactable clay or a rubber liner. This process can be very involved and labor intensive but will save and extend the life of the pond or lake.
-
Muskrat and Rodent Damage
+Sounds unlikely but those pesky varmints can cause some serious damage. Muskrats and other small rodents love to dig their way into dams and nest with their families and friends. This doesn’t seem like a big deal but this is weakening the damns and causing water to leak through. The critters are first trapped and safely relocated to a new home. The nests are then dug up and exposed so the dam can be repacked and stabilized once again.
Pond and Lake Restoration
The key to enjoying a pond or lake small or big is keeping it maintained and healthy. As the age increases there are several things that can be done to prolong the life of the pond as well as protect the natural habitat living within the ecosystem. Below are a few options to restore your lake or pond to keep it healthy and beautiful for many years to come.
-
Shoreline restoration
+The first step in a shoreline restoration is to lower the water lever to expose the shoreline. The debris and growth is then removed so the shore can be re-sculpted and shaped. Finally the area will be prepped and seeded or lined with stone or boulder outcroppings. In some cases a combination of all three materials can be used for a very eye appealing and natural look.
-
Dredging
+Prior to dredging a lake study will be performed to give an accurate estimate of the amount of sediment to be removed. The inlets to the pond or lake will be temporarily capped off to stop inflow and the water will then be drained. Wildlife is a top priority to save as many fish, frogs, snakes, and turtles will be safely relocated while the dredge is going on. An entrance and exit point is then determined to allow for removal of material based on safety, time management, and also causing the least amount of disturbance to surrounding area of lake or pond. Once the sediment is removed it can be hauled off site, laid out onsite to dry and re-spread at a later time, or buried in a pit and then covered up. When the dredge is complete, the shorelines will be reshaped and all disturbed areas will be restored to the conditions prior to dredge.
-
Tree and growth removal
+When plants and trees are first installed around a shoreline, they are usually small in size and appealing to the eyes. Over time they can become over grown and cause damage to the pond or lake. Tree roots can grow into the damn and cause leaks down the road or in some cases topple over and rip a damn wide open causing loss of water. Removal of overgrown shrubbery, cattails, and damaging trees are important in increasing the longevity of your dams, keeping the water clean, and just giving an overall cleaner look to the pond or lake.

Erosion Control
Throughout Northeast Ohio, mother nature can take its toll on terrains and drastically change them over time. Due to heavy rains and harsh winters, this can be a never ending battle. With proper techniques, tooling, and a strong understanding of water flow, we can fight right back and prevent future erosion whether it be with a permanent or temporary repair. We must first assess the issues at hand and come up with a plan that will best suit your needs. The current erosion damage will first be fixed and then one of the following control methods will be implemented to ensure proper ground stabilization. There is no erosion job too big or too small for Gradeworks to handle.
-
Control Methods
+- Silt fencing
- Dandy bags
- Seed and straw
- Hydroseed
- Embankment stabilization
- Water diversion/control
- Stone or concrete work
Drainage
One of the biggest threats to structures, properties, and assets is unwanted water. Heavy rains, melting snow, and ice can cause serious damage to all those things you love and worked so hard to obtain. What we do to protect these is take that unwanted water and divert it to a more suitable location. There are many different ways of doing this from a simple swale being dug to digging a pond to hold all unwanted water. Each and every drainage job differs from one another and our course of action depends on the amount of water, terrain, and final location the water will be diverted too. We can design and build you a custom drainage system or we can install from working plans.
-
Our goal is to work with you and your budget to determine the best course of action using one or a combination of the strategies listed below:
+- Site re-grading
- Downspout tie ins
- Catch basins
- Swales
- French drains/foundation drains
- Pond, retention basin, lake installation
